#

The ruling in this case established what came to be known as the "first sale doctrine," later codified in §109(a) of the Copyright Act.

The defendant in this case, R.H. Macy's & Company (now simply known as Macy's) is one of the largest retailers in the world. The plaintiff publishing company, however, appears to have gone out of business.

The author of The Castaway, Hallie Ermine Rives, was a popular writer during his day. He wrote many best-selling novels, including Satan Sanderson, The Kingdom of Slender Swords, and The Valiants of Virginia.
