Congress first enacted Section 115 in response to player pianos. You can still buy player piano rolls today, and you can see an example of one in operation here.

Today, very few §215 licenses are used annually, with most of this sort of licensing going through the Harry Fox Agency instead. Harry Fox now runs Slingshot, a software platform that promises to make music licensing simple without the need for lawyers or licensing-dedicated staff.
