Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, Inc. v. Grokster, Ltd.

545 U.S. 913 (2005)
#

This case drew a lot of publicity, and at the end of the litigation, Grokster's website was replaced by an ominous notice to visitors that "using unauthorized peer-to-peer services is illegal and is prosecuted by copyright owners", and that "YOUR IP ADDRESS IS [user's IP] AND HAS BEEN LOGGED." It is unclear what purpose would be served by logging the IP addresses of visitors to the site, as visiting grokster.com is not criminal.
